Hosokawa Micron has a long-held reputation for developing and manufacturing first-class mixing equipment of exceptional quality and the Conical Paddle Mixer is one of the latest additions to the portfolio. Twenty years of R&D by Hosokawa have culminated in this adaptable, energy-efficient vertical batch mixer, which offers a useful range of applications, including the low to mid-shear mixing of fragile powders and ‘instant’ agglomerates, mixing powders with liquids, sterilising and pasteurising batches of product, low temperature vacuum drying and processing of powders, granules and liquids at high temperature.
Ideal for scenarios where accuracy, processing speed, product integrity and yield are paramount, the Hosokawa Micron Conical Paddle Mixer is a tailor-made, reliable solution that can benefit many processing industries and may be equipped with a variety of optional features and accessories, depending on requirements, including a heating/cooling jacket, lump breaker, sampler, temperature and pressure sensors, liquid injection capability and CIP system.
Expertly engineered in-house, the mixer rotor has been specially designed to avoid product hold up while processing, which not only maximises yield, but optimises hygiene and allows for easy cleaning, making it perfect for food processing.
The Conical Paddle Mixer range is available in sizes from 50 to 15,000+ litres.
Specification
Hosokawa Micron’s Conical Paddle Mixer for low to mid-shear batch mixing is available in a range of sizes (with capacities typically ranging from 50 litres to at least 15,000 litres). Larger sizes are possible and available on request. The mixer boasts a variety of complementary optional equipment to enhance functionality, including a new, heavy-duty sampler with excellent-quality seals and vacuum/overpressure tightness for handling critical materials, as well as a lump breaker featuring optional liquid injection capability.
Used for
Hosokawa Micron’s Conical Paddle Mixer is perfect for mixing, drying and reaction processes for a variety of powders, liquids and granules and is ideally suited for processing extremely hot products, fragile powders, ‘instant’ agglomerates and brittle materials. It can also perform low temperature vacuum drying and liquid recovery. Typical applications include mixing chemicals and minerals for pesticides, mixing gypsum, additives and pigments for wallpaper manufacture and mixing sugar granules with mint oil, dextrose, colourings and starch for mint sugar. The equipment also comes into its own in the competitive cocoa industry, where it is used for sterilising and homogenising cacao nibs.
Key Features
How Does It Work?
Hosokawa Micron’s Conical Paddle Mixer is a high-performance vertical batch mixer featuring an extremely efficient external drive and central paddle rotor, which provides both vertical and axial motion as it spins in the vessel and is suitable for multiple processes, including heavy duty mixing, chemical reactions and vacuum drying.
Ideal for fragile products and powders, granules and liquids requiring low to mid-shear mixing and minimal distortion, the configuration and design of the single rotor means that it gently and constantly guides 100% of the products to the surface of the batch while keeping them in constant contact with the vessel wall. Gravitational pull (coming from the centre of the mixer) forces the mixture downwards to create a continual, efficient motion even when operated at low speeds.
Importantly, the clever design of the paddle mixer means that heat transfer between the mixture and the vessel is optimised, allowing for both temperature control and energy efficiency during processing.
Conveniently, the adaptable rotational speed of the rotor means that the mixing process can be further optimised. Typically, the rotor speed operates between 1 and 10 metres a second.
Material enters the Conical Paddle Mixer from an inlet in the top, while the large outlet at the bottom of the mixing vessel allows for fast and efficient gravitational discharge of the processed material via its ball segment valve. A typical discharge for a free-flowing powder is an impressive 99.99%. Side outlets and slide gate bottom outlets are also available, in additional to the ball segment valve.
The mixer also benefits from a variety of optional ancillary equipment, including a liquid spraying system with air or non-air supported nozzles and a lump breaker for the product zone with an optional liquid injection system and special sealing of the shaft.
